Writing Tip #1: Hoard. Don’t Delete Anything…Ever

When you start a new project, create two documents. One will serve as your manuscript. The other will function as a recycling bin. Whenever you decide to get rid of something–be it a sentence, a chapter, a character, a setting, etc.–copy it onto the latter document. Why? We typically delete things when we feel that they do not fit well with the rest of the narrative. However, as one gets deeper into a project–or starts another project altogether–use can sometimes be found for that which was previously discarded. Resist the urge to condemn your “trash” to eternal banishment. 🙂
