The Briefest of Engagements

jane_austen_coloured_versionAlthough Jane Austen never married, she was once engaged. On 2 December 1802, a man by the name of Harris Bigg-Wither–the brother of a pair of sisters that Ms. Austen had befriended–proposed to her. She accepted. The following morning, however, she decided to break off the engagement. Her exact reasons for doing so remain unknown. Nonetheless, speculation abounds. Many believe that Ms. Austen was–quite simply–not attached to Mr. Bigg-Wither.
